Toilet overflowing? Stop flushing.

What to do when a toilet starts overflowing or backing up. Stop flushing, keep clear of contaminated water and arrange suitable plumbing help.

Call for urgent help. WhatsApp replies may not be immediate. We’ll confirm attendance and charges.

Stop adding water

If the bowl is rising or not draining, do not flush again. Repeated flushing can make an overflow worse. Keep children and pets away from wastewater.

Identify the part without dismantling it

From a safe position, note whether water is coming from the bowl, the cistern or a pipe connection. A blocked waste route is different from a cistern that will not stop filling. You do not need to remove a concealed cistern panel to describe the problem.

Avoid chemical experiments

Do not add or mix drain-cleaning products. Tell the attending plumber if any product has already been used. Avoid contact with contaminated water and do not treat a wastewater overflow as a simple clean-water spill.

Explain how many fittings are affected

Mention whether this is the only toilet, if several sinks or drains are also backing up, and if sewage is escaping outside. Those details help distinguish a local toilet fault from a wider drainage problem.

Confirm suitable attendance

A plumbing repair and specialist external drainage work are not necessarily the same service. Explain the symptoms and ask about the scope, equipment and charges before booking. Read blocked and overflowing toilet repairs, emergency bathroom repairs or our call-out-cost checklist. If clean water is escaping continuously, see the burst-pipe first steps.
