Immersion heater faults and urgent hot-water loss

If stored hot water normally heats electrically and has suddenly gone cold, tell us whether the problem began after a power interruption, a control change or an unexplained trip. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping circuit.

Check the system description, not the wiring

Some cylinders use an immersion as their main heat source; others use one as backup to a boiler. A timer, tariff schedule or separate boost control can affect when water heats. Read the normal user instructions, but do not open a switch, thermostat cover or cylinder electrical connection.

Report any burning smell, scorch marks, wet controls or tripping. Keep away from wet electrical equipment and seek appropriate electrical assistance.

Fault finding before replacement

Cold water does not prove that the heating element has failed. The electrical supply, controls, thermostat and element may need assessment. The scope must include the right tradesperson for the fault rather than assuming a plumbing visit covers all electrical repairs.

If hot water works at some outlets but not others, mention that before booking. A local mixing or tap fault may need a different visit.

Our supplied services include immersion heater replacement. Cylinder condition, element specification, access and isolation affect whether replacement is suitable. Some work may require draining; seized fittings or corrosion can change the options.
