Finding your stop tap before a plumbing emergency
Call for urgent help. WhatsApp replies may not be immediate. We’ll confirm attendance and charges.
Start with the property’s information
Check handover notes or ask the landlord, managing agent or previous installer. An internal stop tap may be near where the supply enters the building, including a kitchen cupboard or utility area, but locations vary. Not every valve under a sink controls the whole home.
In flats, a valve may be in a service cupboard or serve only part of the system. Ask the building manager which control belongs to your flat and whether a key or permission is needed for access.
Identify it without dismantling anything
If you know the valve and it is safely accessible, follow the property’s instructions for normal operation. Do not force a seized handle, loosen fittings or disconnect a pipe to test isolation.
An outside stop tap may be shared or managed by the water company. Do not operate unidentified communal valves, lift heavy covers or work in the road. Ask the supplier for guidance if the outside control is your only option.
If water is already escaping
Do not enter a wet electrical area or reach beneath an unstable ceiling to get to a control. Explain that you cannot safely isolate the supply when calling. A heating circuit or stored-water system may continue leaking after the incoming mains is turned off.
Follow the burst-pipe first steps. For a valve that leaks or will not close, see stopcock repairs.
Make the next call easier
Keep access clear once the problem is resolved, and record the correct location for other occupants. If isolation is unreliable, arrange assessment rather than assuming it will work next time.
