Do not force a seized valve

A stiff handle is not an invitation to use a longer tool. Excess force can damage an old valve or connection. If it will not move with normal operation, leave it and explain the problem when calling.

A valve that appears closed may not fully isolate the supply. Do not disconnect a fitting to test it. The plumber needs to establish a reliable isolation method before work starts.

Internal and external controls are different

An indoor stop tap may serve your property, while an outside control may be shared or managed by the water supplier. Do not turn off a neighbour’s or unidentified shared supply. If the outside control is inaccessible, damaged or in the highway, contact the water company for guidance.

Preparing for the call-out

Describe where the valve is: under a sink, in a cupboard, behind a panel or outside. Mention whether there is room to reach the pipework and whether the property shares a supply. Repair or replacement depends on condition, access and safe upstream isolation.

If there is already an active burst, explain that first and follow the burst-pipe first steps. The immediate priority is limiting escape of water, not upgrading every valve.
