Gas central heating faults in Kent

Gas central heating problems in Kent? Discuss boiler and heating faults, safe first steps, qualified attendance and the scope of the repair before booking.

Call for urgent help. WhatsApp replies may not be immediate. We’ll confirm attendance and charges.

When a gas boiler stops heating the house, the boiler itself is only one possible source of the fault. The controls, circulation and radiator circuit also matter. Call with the symptoms so we can discuss the appropriate attendance and the work that needs assessing.

Gas smell or carbon monoxide alarm? Treat it as an emergency

A routine heating booking is not the right route for a suspected gas escape. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 and follow their instructions. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds or you suspect exposure, leave the property and seek emergency advice; call 999 if anyone is seriously unwell or in immediate danger. Do not wait for a WhatsApp response.

For a heating breakdown without those warning signs, note what the appliance display says and whether hot water is also affected. Do not open the boiler case or attempt work on gas connections.

Boiler fault or heating-circuit fault?

A boiler that displays a fault code, one that does not respond to the thermostat, and one that heats tap water but not radiators need different checks. Describe what happens when the heating is normally scheduled to run. Note whether all rooms are cold or only one zone.

A water leak also needs its source identified: nearby pipework, a radiator connection and the appliance itself are not interchangeable diagnoses. Our boiler water-leak guide explains what to report without touching wet or internal components.

The right registration for the work

Gas work must be undertaken by a suitably Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the attending engineer’s current ID card, including the work categories on the reverse; registration for one category does not establish competence for every appliance or fuel. HSE explains how to check an engineer, and the Gas Safe Register provides a public checking service.

When booking, say whether the appliance uses mains natural gas or LPG and whether it serves a home or commercial premises. Do not assume that an appointment for domestic heating covers a commercial plant room or a different fuel. Confirm the relevant scope before attendance.

Information and access for the visit

Provide the make, model and displayed code if you can read them safely. Tell us about recent repairs, recurring resets and any loss of system pressure. If the boiler is boxed in, above a worktop or in a restricted cupboard, mention that when arranging the appointment.

Access may also be needed to room controls, radiators and the hot-water cylinder. Have the appliance manual and previous service information available if you have them. Do not remove panels or climb to photograph a label.

Breakdown repair is not an annual service

A repair investigates a reported fault. A scheduled appliance service has a different scope, and neither should be presented as a landlord gas safety record unless that inspection is separately arranged and completed. State exactly what you need when calling, particularly if an agent or landlord requires particular documentation.

Parts availability and findings determine whether a repair can be completed during the first visit. Agree diagnostic charges, authorisation limits and any return visit before work proceeds. A replacement appliance or system alteration needs a separate quotation and appropriate documentation.

Heating after the immediate fault

If the boiler works but heat distribution remains uneven, the next step may concern the wider central heating system. Where contamination is suspected, discuss whether powerflushing is suitable rather than assuming it will resolve a boiler fault. Water-based floor circuits are covered separately on our underfloor heating page.
